Your Impact

 

As the Database Lead, you’ll take the reins of MS-SQL and Oracle databases, ensuring they run smoothly and securely. Your role will involve leading the delivery of critical database outcomes by collaborating with skilled database professionals and guiding their efforts, while you develop and execute advanced administration strategies. You’ll manage the migration of our database systems to Azure, ensuring a seamless transition that aligns with our business goals. Your expertise will drive database security, optimise performance, and tackle technical challenges head-on, all while collaborating with teams across the business to deliver outstanding results.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring smooth running of database infrastructure and processes.
  • Drive key database deliverables by collaborating with and influencing a team of database professionals, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development.
  • Develop and implement advanced database administration strategies across Wintel and Unix platforms.
  • Ensure robust disaster recovery and business continuity plans are in place and regularly tested.
  • Manage database migrations to Azure, ensuring smooth transitions and minimal disruption.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and key technology partners to align database strategies with business needs.
  • Maintain database security, optimise performance, and address technical challenges promptly.
  • Manage relationships with vendors, ensuring quality service delivery and alignment with objectives.
  • Continuously identify and implement opportunities for improvement in database operations.

 

About You

 

  • 10+ years of experience in database support and improvement activities, ideally within a large retail organisation.
  • 5+ years in a lead engineer or team lead role, with accountability to IT leadership teams.
  • Proven track record working with high-performance teams and managing database systems across Wintel and Unix platforms.
  • Extensive experience in migrating databases to Azure and implementing advanced database strategies.
  • Demonstrable skills in tuning database performance and proactively improving architecture using best practices.
  • Solid understanding of Azure networking and PaaS services (e.g., ExpressRoute, SQL DB, ASE, Azure web apps) and expertise in operating systems, virtualisation platforms, and storage is a significant bonus.
  • Strong capability in writing technical designs and implementation plans and experience in 24x7 high availability environments.
  • Excellent consultative, communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to capture and understand business requirements in Agile projects.
  • Proven ability to mentor a team to successful outcomes, with well-developed skills in prioritisation, relationship building, and delivering under deadlines.
